One of my favorite Christmas decorations is hanging wreaths on each of our exterior windows on our home! It brings me so much pleasure to look at them each time I pass by our house! It makes our home look warm and inviting and it’s fairly easy to do! Let me tell you how…
- Start off by purchasing enough fresh or artificial wreaths for each window of your home. I prefer fresh wreaths and I purchase them from a local nursery who has a wreath sale each November! However, there are lots of artificial wreaths that look very realistic and obviously you only have to purchase them once and then re-use them each year, so there’s that. Just be sure to get wreaths that are full and thick. For reference, my windows are 30″ wide and I use a 20-22″ wreath.
- Add a bow (if it doesn’t come with one) that can stand up to the weather. Mine are a “velvet” ribbon that does great with snow and rain.
- Next, using glass cleaner, clean the outside of the window. Assuming your windows are double hung windows, open the lower half of the window and pull the upper window down just enough to clean the center of the window. Be sure that the window is nice and dry or the suction cups won’t adhere.
- Then, using a 3″ suction cup with a plastic hook, stick suction cup/hook on the center of the upper window.

- Take the wreath and hang on hook. Carefully slide upper window back up and into place. Close lower window and lock.
- Note: Hang the 1st wreath on a 1st floor window so you can figure out exact location of suction cup and wreath. If you need to change it or move around, it’s easy because you can stand outside and move around until you like the location. Once you find the correct positioning, you can easily duplicate it on the rest of the windows. When it’s time to do your 2nd floor windows, you can follow the above steps doing it inside.
- Add a battery operated candle to each window for an extra special touch.
- Set up a few spotlights on your front lawn shining up at your house to showcase your newly wreathed (is that a word?) house.
The great thing about hanging wreaths is they look great during the day and night! I hope you can go outside with a cup of hot cocoa in hand to take in the beauty and exclaim, “It’s beautiful, Clark”. Happy Christmas decorating!
