When you live in a cold climate, staying inside from November-March can get pretty bleak and make for a looong winter! It’s much more fun to get outside and enjoy the cold winter weather with a cozy, outdoor bonfire! Here are a few easy steps to get your backyard ready for Winter entertaining….
Start with identifying a spot that’s large enough for a bonfire and chairs/logs around it. You’ll want to stay clear of any trees or shrubs. We live on a lake, so we set our bonfire up right on the beach. But anywhere will do!
You’ll need 4 metal (approx 3 ft tall) and 4 wooden posts (approx 8-10 ft tall). You want the posts tall enough that there is a good amount of head room when you hang the lights.

Set your bonfire pit in the middle of your space. Next hammer in metal posts around the “4 corners” of your area. Then, hammer 1 wooden post next to each metal post in each “corner”. Using wire or twine, tie the 1 metal post and 1 wooden post together to create support.
Once you have a metal/wood post combo in each of the 4 corners around the bonfire, you’re ready to hang the outdoor lights! I purchased my lights at Home Depot. They are 27ft long so it gave me plenty of room to hang them. I will say for the price, these are a great deal. We’ve used them for 4 years in a row! Click here for link

You can put an eye loop hook at the top of the wooden post, or you can simply wrap the lighting wire around the top of the wooden post. Use 2 strings and “criss cross” the lights or use 4 strings to go from post to post. The more casual, whimsical look, the better! However you hang them, it will be beautiful!
Gather some chairs and a picnic table or two around your bonfire and you’re almost ready to get festive!
Lastly and most importantly, make a thermos or coffee urn of your favorite hot chocolate. Or heck, just make hot water, and provide hot chocolate packets in a cute basket so everyone can make their own! Provide plenty of marshmallows, whip cream, mini candy canes and some popcorn! Drape some cozy blankets over the chairs, get your bluetooth speaker and play some Christmas Carols and you’re ready for your Outdoor Winter Bonfire Party! Enjoy!
